| Design Ideas | Exceptionally compact as compared to others, this carefree perennial is the ideal size for patio containers. Pair it with small grasses, and bold hot-colored flowering perennials to create eye-catching summer accents. Plant in groups at the front or middle layer of a sun-drenched border to create a cottage garden look, or spot through a butterfly or cutting garden. Essential to a perennial wildlife garden; the showy clusters of many tiny flowers produce vital nectar for beneficial insects including bees, butterflies and hoverflies, while the seeds of the aged flowerheads, if left intact, provide food for over wintering birds. |

| Lore | This genus was named for the Greek mythological hero, Achilles. In the mythical siege of Troy, it is said that yarrow was the plant given by the centaur Chiron to the Greek general, Achilles. Its foliage is a natural coagulant and was used to treat wounds on the battlefield. The genus includes over one hundred species; this species (A. milllefolium) is a native to Europe. |
