| History | Newly introduced in 1999, Golden Spirit is among the best new shrubs in America today. The species is native to drier regions from Europe eastward into China. Golden leaves are coveted for high contrast foliage compositions. Cut smoke tree blossom wands have become favored by upscale florists in New York City. While species of Cotinus are native to North America, this species originated in China and Europe. |
| Lore | In Europe, smoke trees were a dye plant for both cloth and leather tanning to create the color known as yellow fustic. Although it contains toxic sap, it was used by apothecaries as a coagulant. |
