| History | C. sempervirens is native to the Eastern Mediterranean including areas of Libya, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Israel, Lebanon, Jordan and Iran. The species name sempervirens comes from the Latin word ‘evergreen’. Although more of an ornamental plant today, it was grown for its hard, scented wood and was used in the construction of such famous landmarks as Vatican City in Rome and the doors of St. Peter’s Basilica. Swane’s Golden was selected in 1944 by Swane Bros. Nursery of Australia and introduced into production in 1956. |
